SAN JOSE, Calif. - The United Vietnamese Student Associations of Northern California (UVSA) will host its second annual cultural show,“Uoc Vong Tuong Lai: GREASE” to be held November 6, 2004 at 7:00pm at the Fremont High School Auditorium in Sunnyvale, CA. Uoc Vong Tuong Lai (Hope for the Future) is UVSA’s annual cultural production. The show brings together talented students from different schools in Northern California. This year the show is produced as a musical based on the movie of the same name. But the screenplay has been adapted for the Vietnamese-American experience. Like last year, the proceeds from the show will be donated to charity to benefit impoverished children. This year the focus is on the victims of child sex trafficking.
In January 30, 2004, Dateline NBC aired an undercover investigation into the illegal sex trafficking industry in Cambodia. Children as young as seven years have been found as sex slaves. Since the report, numerous studies have come forward showing a large percentage of these children sex slaves came from Vietnam. UVSA's goal is to raise at least $2,000 for charity to address child sex trafficking. An anonymous donor has already donated $1,000 towards this goal. Phuong Tu, President of UVSA, shares her gratitude, "I would like to send my deepest appreciation. Thank you!" Donations will be made out to the Red Firecracker Foundation, a nonprofit group which supports organizations that address child sex trafficking. More information about this group and the child sex trafficking issue can be found on their website at www.redfirecracker.org. UVSA is a nonprofit organization that aims to unite Vietnamese American youth groups across Northern California in advocating the Vietnamese American community through education, community service, and cultural awareness.
